[Fine Binding | Riviere & Son] Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Fitzgerald, Edward (trans.). Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam, The Astronomer-Poet Of Persia, Rendered Into English Verse. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1872. Third edition.

Bound by Riviere & Son in dark green crushed morocco, with a large paneled design on the covers of gilt stamped flowers on an inlaid red background, connected with gouged lines and surrounded with gilt ruling and a rolled dot border. Five bands to spine with title to second compartment, remaining compartments ruled in gilt. Gilt ruled turn-ins with small inlaid heart design at the corners, and beautiful dark green marbled endpapers with two gilt fillet borders and heart designs in the corners on the front paste-down. Top edge gilt. Measures approx. 6.5" x 8.5". Light fading around edges of covers, spine faded to a mellow brown. Slight rubbing to edges. A stunning example of turn-of-the-century bookbinding.
