Pierce, Clay Arthur. Kufu--A Song of the Southern Seas--and Other Poems. St Louis, MO: Printed by Fred F. Gottschalk at the Gottschalk Press, 1898. Inscribed by Pierce on the page following the endpapers. Printed in red and black on uncut Alton Mill paper, with a pictorial title page and a variety of Kelmscott-style arts & crafts initials and tailpieces throughout. Bound in limp green cloth with gilt lettering and initial to front cover. Marbled endpapers in gilt, green, yellow, and blue; top edge gilt. Measures approx. 6.5" x 8.75". Some very light rubbing and foxing to early pages. A beautiful example, the only title produced by the press, and rarely encountered.
"As a piece of bookmaking nothing could be more beautiful, and a glance at its contents assures us that the poems are not without interest" (The Bookman, 1899).
